Why I Built Typing the Word

A few months ago, I began thinking about a simple question:

What happens when we slow down?

Many of us read the Bible regularly, but modern life encourages us to move quickly. We scroll quickly, read quickly, and often move on to the next thing before we have truly reflected on what we have read.

My father spent several years hand-copying the Bible after retirement. Watching him devote so much time and attention to Scripture made me curious. Why would someone spend years copying words they had already read many times before?

Over time, I began to understand.

Copying Scripture changes the pace. It asks us to notice each word, each sentence, and each verse. Instead of moving through the text, we allow the text to move through us.

That experience inspired me to build Typing the Word.

The website is intentionally simple. There are no ads, no distractions, and no pressure to move quickly. The goal is not speed. The goal is attention.

Readers can type through Scripture verse by verse, track their progress, maintain writing streaks, and return to where they left off. It is designed to be a quiet place where Scripture can be approached one verse at a time.

Today the site includes the King James Version (KJV) and the World English Bible (WEB), and I hope to add more translations in the future. I also hope to expand it into a place where readers can share their journeys and encourage one another in the practice of Scripture copying.

Typing the Word is still a small project, but every project begins somewhere.

If it helps even a few people slow down, spend more time with Scripture, and engage more deeply with God's Word, then it has already fulfilled its purpose.

Reading moves quickly. Copying slows us down.
